AI phone agent for inbound and outbound calls
What ships with the phone call
An AI phone agent is a voice agent connected to the phone network. Cartesia runs the speech models, the turn-taking, and the telephony integration; you bring the instructions, the LLM, and the tools.
Three ways to get a number
Provision a US number from Cartesia, import numbers from your Twilio account (any country Twilio offers, with international outbound at your Twilio rates), or connect your own carrier over SIP.
Inbound and outbound
Assign a number to an agent and its inbound calls route to that agent. Place outbound calls with one API request, or queue up to 5,000 recipients with batch calling.
Realtime models on the call
Managed Agents run Ink-2 speech-to-text, the LLM you choose, and Sonic-3.6 text-to-speech, with turn-taking and interruption handling built in.
Telephony without a bridge
Numbers connect to agents directly, so you don't write Media Streams glue just to put an agent on the phone. If you'd rather bridge your own telephony, stream audio with a hosted agent over a single WebSocket.
Keep your numbers and your rates
Twilio and SIP numbers stay with your provider. Cartesia routes the calls through the credentials you connect, so your rates and your number portability don't change.
Evaluate before you route traffic
Build and test the agent in the Playground, then measure call quality with built-in and custom evaluations before a live number answers.

How to put an AI phone agent on the phone
01
Build and test an agent in the Playground or with the Agents API: instructions, voice, LLM, and the tools it needs.
02
Connect a phone number. Provision a US number from Cartesia, import one from your Twilio account, or attach a SIP trunk from your carrier.
03
Assign the number to the agent for inbound calls. A number serves one agent at a time; an agent can hold several numbers.
04
Place outbound calls with the calls API using your number's ID, or queue a batch of up to 5,000 recipients and let it dial as capacity frees up.
