How to turn text into speech
Type your text
Type or paste up to 500 characters into the demo above, or start from a sample script.
Choose a voice
Pick a language and a voice, then press Play. Switch voices to hear the same line read a different way.
Build with the API
Create a free API key. From your backend, send text and a voice ID, and the API returns the audio.
Speech synthesis examples
Support
AI support agents read order updates and troubleshooting steps aloud, in the same voice on every call.
Gaming
Characters speak dialogue generated from your script, so a new line needs no studio session.
Content
Voiceovers for videos and tutorials come straight from the script, so changing a line means regenerating it instead of re-recording it.
Media
Articles and newsletters become audio editions and podcast segments.
Healthcare
Appointment reminders and patient instructions are read aloud from text your team has reviewed.
Sales
Product demos and sales explainers get narration you can update whenever the pitch changes.
Voice Agents
AI voice agents speak each reply as the language model writes it, fast enough for a natural conversation.
Dubbing
Translated scripts become voice tracks for localized video.
Avatars
Digital avatars and virtual presenters speak dialogue generated from text.
Logistics
Shipment updates and dispatch instructions are spoken with the latest delivery details filled in.
Recruiting
Interview introductions and scheduling messages are read from approved scripts, the same way for every candidate.
Accessibility
Guides and course material get an audio version people can listen to while they read along.
Fluent and native, worldwide
Reach international markets with Sonic — 44 languages and a wide range of accents, all with native-speaker quality voices.
American English, 3 voices

Speech synthesis in your own app
Send finished text and get back a WAV, MP3, or raw PCM file. Or stream text over a WebSocket as your language model writes it, with first audio in under 90ms.
Browser SpeechSynthesis or a speech API?
Both read text aloud.
Browser speech synthesis
The Web Speech API's SpeechSynthesis interface reads text in the browser with the voices that browser and operating system provide, so the voice changes from one setup to the next.
Best for reading text aloud in a web page.
Read the browser TTS guideCartesia's speech API
Your backend sends text and a voice ID and gets audio back, in the same voice on every device. Stream it into a call or save it as a file.
Best for production apps and voice agents.

Speech synthesis FAQs
What is speech synthesis?
Speech synthesis is the use of software to turn written text into spoken audio. It is also called text to speech (TTS) or voice synthesis. Modern systems use AI models trained on recorded speech, so they sound far closer to a person than the robotic voices of older software.
Can you give me an example of speech synthesis?
A phone agent reading back your appointment time, a navigation app announcing the next turn, and a screen reader speaking a web page all use speech synthesis. So does the demo at the top of this page, which reads the text you type into it.
Is speech synthesis free?
The demo on this page is free, with no sign-up. To use the API in your own app, create an account: the Free plan includes 20,000 credits a month, and paid plans add more.
What is the difference between speech synthesis and speech recognition?
How does speech synthesis work?
An AI model reads the text and predicts how it should sound: how each word is pronounced, the rhythm of the sentence, and where the emphasis falls. It then generates the audio. Cartesia's models stream that audio as they generate it, so playback starts before the sentence is finished.
Is Cartesia the same as the browser SpeechSynthesis API?
No. The browser's window.speechSynthesis speaks text with the voices the listener's browser and operating system provide, so the voice changes from one device to the next. Cartesia is a hosted API that returns generated audio to your application, in the same voice everywhere. For browser-only playback without an API key, see the JavaScript text-to-speech tutorial.
How do I integrate speech synthesis into an application?
Create an API key, keep it on your backend, and send text with a voice ID; the API returns audio. The Python text-to-speech guide shows how to generate and save a WAV file in a few lines. For a phone or voice agent, stream the audio over a WebSocket, or let Cartesia Managed Agents run the agent and its calls.
What languages does Cartesia support?
Cartesia's voices speak 40+ languages from one model, with regional accents such as American, British, and Australian English, Canadian French, and Mexican Spanish. The languages page has samples in each language.
Can I stream speech as it is generated?
Yes. Over a WebSocket or server-sent events, Cartesia sends audio in chunks as it is generated, so your app can start playback before the whole clip is ready. The streaming API reference shows the response format.
Can I control the speed and emotion of synthesized speech?
Yes. You can set speaking speed and volume and choose from 60+ emotions to change the delivery. The voice controls guide lists the options for each model.
How is voice cloning different from speech synthesis?
Voice cloning creates a reusable voice from recordings of a speaker. Speech synthesis then uses that voice, or any stock voice, to read new text. The voice cloning page covers recording requirements.
