A Weave AI receptionist for your practice's calls
A Weave call route forwards calls to a Cartesia agent's number, so the agent works as your Weave AI receptionist and hands patients to the front desk.
Front-line agent
Answers calls the Weave route forwards and passes the rest to your staff.
Instructions
Answer office hours, accepted insurance and directions. Transfer toothaches and same-day requests to the front desk call group, and billing questions to the billing coordinator.

What a Weave AI voice agent can do
Open one to watch a call. The grey lines are the tools the agent calls mid-sentence.
A Forwarding Number step in a Weave call route sends calls to the agent's number, with a ring duration you set.
A phone tree key forwards patients who press it to the agent, which answers insurance and hours questions on its own.
Patients who need a person go to a Weave number that rings the front desk, billing or a call group.

Set it up
A phone hand-off. A Weave call route step forwards calls to the agent's number. There is no SIP trunk between Weave and Cartesia. Vendor details read in November 2026.
Give the agent a number
Import a number from Twilio or connect a SIP trunk number. Transfers work only on Twilio and SIP trunk numbers, not on Cartesia numbers.
Open a call route
In the Weave app, go to Settings, Phone, then Call Routes, and select the route for your number. Editing call routes needs the Super Admin role.
Forward to the agent
Click Add Step, choose Forwarding Number, enter the agent's number and set Ring Duration. For a menu, add the step under a dial key in a Phone Tree step instead.
Set the way back and test
Add a transfer rule in Cartesia to a Weave number that rings your front desk. Call the practice, reach the agent, and ask for a person.
Before you build
One override per location
Weave allows one active override per location, so a forward-all override to the agent can't run alongside a holiday or voicemail override.
Give phone trees a fallback
Set a Fallback destination on each phone tree so callers who press nothing still reach your staff or the agent.
The agent may see the office number
Forwarded Caller ID shows an office number you choose, so the agent may not get the patient's number. Have it ask for name and date of birth rather than look patients up by caller ID.
Transfers are cold
The person who picks up gets the call, not the conversation. Have the agent tell the patient where it's sending them before it transfers.

Weave AI voice agent FAQs
Does Weave have an AI receptionist?
Yes. Weave's AI Receptionist answers calls and texts, books appointments and answers routine questions, and works with Open Dental, Dentrix and Eaglesoft. To use a Cartesia agent instead, a Weave call route forwards calls to the agent's phone number. Weave has no built-in Cartesia connection.
Can I use my own AI agent with Weave?
Yes, if the agent has its own phone number. A Forwarding Number step in a call route sends calls there, and the agent transfers back to a Weave number that rings your front desk. A Cartesia agent calls webhook tools you define in your own systems and uses the voice and model you choose.
How do I forward Weave calls to an AI agent?
In the Weave app, go to Settings, Phone, then Call Routes, and select the route. Click Add Step, choose Forwarding Number, enter the agent's number and set Ring Duration. For a menu, add the step under a dial key in a Phone Tree step. Editing call routes needs the Super Admin role.
Can the agent book appointments in my practice software?
Yes, through webhook tools you configure against your practice management system. The Open Dental page shows tools for finding open slots and creating appointments.
Will the agent see the patient's phone number?
Not always. Forwarded Caller ID shows an office number you choose, so the agent may get that instead of the patient's number. Have it ask for name and date of birth rather than look patients up by caller ID.
Who bills the minutes when Weave forwards to an agent?
Cartesia charges $0.03/min, plus LLM usage and telephony, and Twilio or your SIP carrier bills the agent's number. Transfers work only on Twilio and SIP trunk numbers, not on Cartesia numbers.
