A bilingual law firm answering service that takes intake in the caller's language
Callers give a name, a number, the date, the other party and one line about the matter in English or Spanish. Your intake team gets a record that says which language to call back in.
The agent asks for a name, a number, the date, the other party and one line about what happened. It doesn't ask for the full story or comment on the facts.
The agent saves the other party's name on the intake record and books a call with an attorney. Your staff run the conflict check before that call, and the agent never tells a caller whether there is a conflict.
A caller who starts in English and wants to explain in Spanish can switch. With language detection on, the agent follows and keeps the details.
You decide what counts as urgent. A court date within a week goes straight to the intake attorney, with the caller's language noted.
Intake in Spanish, by place
A law firm's phone line carries more rules than most. These are the ones that touch a bilingual agent.
California
California requires every party to consent before a call is recorded. A firm taking calls from California should say, in English and in Spanish, that the call is recorded and that the caller is talking to an AI.
Prospective clients
ABA Model Rule 1.18 sets out a lawyer's duties to prospective clients, confidentiality among them. Ask your state bar or ethics counsel how your state's version applies to intake taken by an AI agent on a vendor's platform, and what your greeting should say.
Voices
Cartesia offers Mexican and Castilian Spanish voices. Listen to names and legal terms in your own script, and have a fluent speaker review them before you publish.
We are not your lawyers, and this is not legal advice. Professional conduct rules differ by state and change. Have counsel review your greeting, your script and your recording notice.

Bilingual legal answering service FAQs
What is a bilingual legal answering service?
A voice agent that answers a law firm's phones in English and Spanish. It takes a name, a number, the language, the other party and a one-line description, and it hands urgent matters to an attorney.
How much does a bilingual legal answering service cost?
Call time costs $0.03 a minute, and telephony and LLM usage are billed separately. See pricing.
How does it compare with a human legal answering service?
A human service puts a receptionist on each call, and Spanish depends on who is staffed. This agent takes intake in English or Spanish, saves the other party's name for your conflict check and books the attorney call while the caller is on the line. Its instructions keep it from giving advice, and it transfers to your intake attorney on the rules you set. Call the sample intake line above to hear it in Spanish.
Does it run a conflict check?
No. The agent asks for the other party's name and saves it on the intake record. Your staff run the conflict check in your own system before an attorney calls back.
Can it work as a bilingual legal virtual receptionist during the day?
Yes. It answers every call that reaches its number, so you can send it daytime overflow, nights and weekends, or every call. Forward calls from your firm's existing number, and set the intake attorney's number as the transfer target. The transfer needs a Twilio or SIP trunk number.
Can the agent give legal advice?
No. The script keeps it to intake facts, and it never says whether a caller has a case or what a fee will be. A person handles those questions.
Can it switch from English to Spanish mid-call?
Yes, if you enable language detection in the agent's speech settings. It is in beta and follows callers across ten languages, English and Spanish among them. Enabling it swaps the speech-recognition model from Ink-2 to Deepgram Flux, so run test calls with your own intake script before clients reach it.
Does it connect to Clio or MyCase?
Cartesia has no built-in connector to either one. The agent writes intake records through a webhook, and someone who can code points that webhook at your practice system once.
Is a call with the agent confidential?
Rule 1.18 governs what a lawyer owes a prospective client, and how it applies to an AI agent run by a vendor is a question for your state bar or ethics counsel. Here is what the agent does on its side. It collects only the intake facts listed above and gives no advice. An agent-wide setting turns off storage of transcripts, recordings and caller numbers, and if you keep them, limit who on your team can open them.
