An AI phone agent is a voice agent connected to the phone network. It answers inbound calls or places outbound ones, talks with the caller in natural speech, and can use tools such as a calendar or order system during the call.

How an AI phone agent works
An AI phone agent has two halves. The first is a voice agent, the software that listens to the caller, decides what to say, calls tools and speaks the answer. The second is the telephone connection that carries the call to and from it.
For inbound calls, a phone number is pointed at the agent, either a number from the platform or one imported from a carrier, and every call to that number reaches it. For outbound calls, the agent is given a number to dial from and a number to call, and it speaks when the person picks up. Carriers can link to the agent over a SIP trunk, which is the usual way a business keeps its existing numbers and rates.
Between those two halves sits a configuration: instructions that say how the agent should behave, a voice, an LLM, and the actions it may take, such as looking up a booking or transferring to a person.
Why it matters for voice agents
A phone call removes every crutch a chat window offers: no buttons, no screen, narrow-band audio, and a caller who expects an answer within about a second.
Example
An illustrative inbound call: a caller asks to move a Thursday appointment. The agent asks for the booking reference, looks it up with a tool, offers two other times, confirms the choice and reads the new time back before ending the call. No menu is involved.
An answering service routes messages to humans, and a virtual receptionist is a role that may be staffed by people or software. The AI phone agent is the software that can fill either job.
